“Away from the academic calendar, however, the framework of a sum- mer studio allowed for some space to explore another shared question: how do we move away from the idea of ‘visitors’ or ‘students’ and towards working with participants? Consid- ering participants here as a group of people who take a more active role to collaborate with an institution or an artist by learning about an idea together as a collective group. RASL has a transdisciplinary practice connecting the arts and sciences and Boijmans has been building a programme with artist educators in Rotterdam-Zuid. Collaborative and transdisciplinary practices are thus very much at the core of how both institutions work.

The structure of the summer studio is thus as follows: mentors design the programme within which a topic is re-imagined through the arts and sciences. Societal and artistic partners are then invited and participants respond to an open call after which they work for ten days in collaboration with the mentors when they want/need to.”
