Dr. Pauwke Berkers is Associate Professor of Sociology of Art and Culture at the Department of Arts & Culture Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam.
Dr. Pauwke Berkers is Associate Professor of Sociology of Art and Culture at the Department of Arts & Culture Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam.
His research focuses on ethno-racial and gender inequality in arts and culture, popular music in particular. He has published in Poetics, Journal of Gender Studies, Cultural Sociology and Gender & Society. Besides co-writing Grondbeginselen der Sociologie (2014), he is author of Gender in Metal Music Production (with Julian Schaap, 2018).
He was a visiting student researcher at Princeton University, and lectured at Tallinna Ülikool and Budapesti Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem. In addition, he received the best-paper award of the Dutch Sociological Association, with Kjell Noordzij and Koen van Eijck, 2018) and is (co-)applicant of several successful NWO proposals (Smart Culture, KIEM, PhDs in the Humanities).
As chair of the research group, he views the Rotterdam Arts & Sciences Lab as the future of academia: rigorous interdisciplinary research firmly embedded in – but also critical towards – the field of arts and culture.
