SUMMARY:RASL minor
DESCRIPTION:This semester\, the RASL minor is taking place again at RASL Spaces\, Hillevliet. \nDuring the minor\, students will work in a team consisting of students from Codarts\, WdKA\, Erasmus University and Delft University on a self-selected matter of concern in the framework of “re-imagining tomorrow through arts and sciences”. Participating students come from a wide variety of studies such as audiovisual design\, composition\, jazz vocals\, fashion design\, arts and culture studies\, political science\, psychology\, industrial design engineering\, history and philosophy. Through engagement with practices of re-imagining tomorrow (in the form of examples\, exercises and your own project)\, we situate the minor in a broader societal context of ecological devastation and historically shaped injustices\, which demand the imagining of alternative futures. Practices of re-imagining tomorrow make us aware that traditional\, disciplinary practices of knowing and doing are always already imaginative\, as they create and reinforce specific ways of experiencing and knowing the world. By addressing and experiencing these worldmaking capabilities of current and future practices\, we can start to work towards futures that are more socially and ecologically just. In the project students will have the space and opportunity to consider what these futures might look like and how we can start enacting them in the present. During classes as well as in projects\, students will participate in a range of different activities\, such as field research\, practice-led workshops\, screenings\, close-listening and close-reading sessions. \nFind more information about the RASL minor here.

SUMMARY:Symposium NGE / RASL
DESCRIPTION:Who or what is the artist of the future?\nSymposium on transdisciplinarity in arts\, sciences\, and philosophy \nOrganised by Nederlands Genootschap voor Esthetica (NGE) / Dutch Association of Aesthetics & RASL \n  \n\n  \nAbout the symposium \nWho or what is the artist of the future? \nSymposium on transdisciplinarity in arts\, sciences\, and philosophy \nOrganised by Nederlands Genootschap voor Esthetica and the Rotterdam Arts and Sciences Lab \nEducation and research\, in both the arts and the sciences\, are to a large extent future-oriented. \nIn Higher Education for the arts and the sciences we observe a drive to experiment with various forms of collaboration. This results in transdisciplinarity; a trend that is increasingly made concrete in education- and research programmes. \nThis trend raises fundamental and practical questions about the assumptions of transdisciplinarity\, its fundamental conditions\, and its future imaginaries. These questions are as relevant for the philosophy of the arts\, pedagogy\, and the philosophy of science as much as these fields can contribute to transdisciplinary practices. \nFirst of all: Why Transdisciplinarity\, and towards which ends? An often heard claim is that collaboration between ‘the arts’ and ‘the sciences’ enables engaging with wicked problems or complex societal concerns\, such as global warming\, public health issues\, and increasing inequalities. \nBut what is it that artists and scientists do when they collaborate\, and what do they work on?  What is the role of imagination? Can scientists make use of artistic imaginations and artists of the scientific imagination? Are these imaginations different\, and if yes\, how? Or are transdisciplinary projects experimenting with new forms of imagination that cannot be categorised along the lines of ‘the sciences’ and ‘the arts’? \nSecond of all: Transdisciplinarity raises the question about the future and futuricity? What do we talk about when we talk about the future? What kind of future is anticipated when we collaborate across the disciplinary bounds of the arts and sciences? Which images of the future condition and diirect transdisciplinarity? And where does this orientation on the future stem from? \nThird of all: What is quality in transdiciplinary collaborations between artists and scientists? And what are the qualities needed when doing so?  Also\, as a philosophical question: How can you reflect and determine quality? What can aesthetics\, as a philosophical discipline\, contribute to reflecting about qualiy when disciplines engage with one another\, cross into each other’s domains\, and perhaps even forge new fields? Do we ‘measure’ or ‘safeguard’ quality in transdisciplinary projects? Do we need to? Do we want this? And if yes\, how would we be able to do so? \n  \n\n  \nProgram: \n10.00: open\, coffee and tea. \n10.30-11.15: NGE-vergadering voor NGE-leden (agenda wordt nog toegezonden) \n11.15-12.00: Clinton Peter Verdonschot: Immanent and aesthetic critique (English) \nA reconstruction of Theodor Adorno’s method of aesthetic critique in order to propose it as an alternative to immanent critique. ‘The positive function of aesthetic negativity in Adorno’ \n12.00-12.45: Gert Wijlage – Van singulariteit naar gemeenschap: het kunstinitiatief DeFKa (Dutch) \nTrefwoorden: affectieve plaatsbepaling\, individueel proces\, wederzijdse inspanning\, transversaal denken\, coöperatieve maatschappij\, nieuw materialisme. \nReferenties: Michel Serres\, Jean Piaget\, Deborah Hauptmann\, Hans-Jörg Rheinberger\, Lucy Irigaray\, Lieke Asma. Projecten o.a.: Rosanna van Klaveren\, Ivanka Annot\, Ingeborg Entrop\, Monika Auch. \n12.45-13.45: Lunch \n13.45-14.30: Arthur Cools – Dissensus and Artistic Activism (English) \nArtistic activism entails the risk that opacity is subordinated (or even erased) and that the political meaning of the artistic intervention replaces and conceals the ambivalences of artistic modes of presentation and impedes their appreciations. \nReferences: Mouffe\, Rancière\, Lyotard\, Lamarque (‘The Opacity of Narrative’). \n14.30-15.15: Emily Evans\, Gerty Van de Perre\, Niels van Poecke – Staging Cancer: Constituting Illness through Theatre (English) \nA discussion of the transdisciplinary space that arises in the disciplinary boundary transgression of the fields of arts\, social sciences and the specific healthcare domain of medical oncology. ‘Does theatre allow us to work towards narrative integration of contingent life experiences by advanced cancer patients?’ \n15.15-15.30: Short break \n15.30-16.15: Arthur Cools – Dissensus and Artistic Activism (English) \nArtistic activism entails the risk that opacity is subordinated (or even erased) and that the political meaning of the artistic intervention replaces and conceals the ambivalences of artistic modes of presentation and impedes their appreciations. \n16.15-17.00: Wander van Baalen – Art-science: A story about the hyphen (English) \nHow does an art-science collaboration come into being? How is this new intersection stabilized? This is an ethnographically informed story from the art-science construction site. \n17.00-17.30: Conversation RASL & NGE & audience on transdisciplinarity in arts\, sciences\, and philosophy. \nDrinks till 18.30 \n  \n\n  \nFriday\, June 24\, 2022 \nLocation: RASL space\, Hillevliet 90\, 3074 KD Rotterdam-Zuid \nLanguage: Dutch & English \nAdmittance \nRSVP: let us know when you plan to attend (with regard to catering) by sending a mail to: erikhagoort@dds.nl \n

SUMMARY:Ad-hoc ‘Breaking Boundaries’ Symposium
DESCRIPTION:On the 14th of June\, The Other Research Group (in collaboration with RASL and the lecturers’ platform ‘Education on the cutting edge of art\, science and technology’) is hosting a research symposium about experiences and challenges of research in between disciplines.\nThe Other Research Group is a loose collective of people with a shared orientation to finding other ways of doing research beyond the traditional academic paper. Most members have an interdisciplinary background and move between different disciplines and requirements. Instead of focusing on ‘what’ research is\, they are interested in how to do research. During past group meetings\, the group discussed questions and experiences of alternative modes of doing research\, including walking; ethnography; ways of writing; and more.\nDuring this symposium\, we would like to invite researchers that work on the cutting edge between art\, science and technology or in the ‘undisciplinary’ space in between disciplines to share ideas and experiences. We will do so in several parallel sessions/workshops/conversations hosted by members of The Other Research Group. The event takes place at EUC Rotterdam. Of course\, the corona measures will be observed. Online participation to the event is possible.\nPlease email Maaike van Papeveld for further questions or registration: m.m.van.papeveld@hr.nl.\nThe capacity of this symposium is limited. When registering\, please let us know whether you would like to join in person or online.

SUMMARY:Seminar on Transdisciplinary Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nHow can different disciplines work together to exchange knowledge and promote emergent transdisciplinary ways of thinking and practicing? This two-day seminar brings together teachers from various disciplines to share experiences\, methodologies\, and practices which foster transdisciplinary learning. The seminar explores the conditions that make transdisciplinary education possible\, the skills and approaches necessary\, the challenges faced by teachers and students\, and the immense potentiality of working across disciplines on shared research and projects.\nParticipation: three representatives nominated by each institution.\nPreparation: Each partner will prepare a concise contribution (text\, video\, artwork\, case study\, etc) that outlines a key proposition\, insight\, or position on transdisciplinary teaching originating in their institutional experience. Deadline for brief proposal: April 16\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Transdisciplinary Teaching Intensive Study Programme builds on research done to date\, bringing together teachers from all network partners to identify and reflect on core issues of transdisciplinary teaching to distill key principles\, values and methods.\nPreparation\nIn preparation we ask each partner to prepare a concise contribution that outlines a key proposition\, insight\, or position on transdisciplinary teaching originating in their institutional experience.\nEach position will be shared with all participants in advance of the workshop and will form a thematic strand of the Intensive Study Programme\nThis can take multiple forms\, both in content and format\, examples might include but are not limited to:\n\n\npresentation of existing transdisciplinary practice /case studies\n\n\nidentifying core issues or problematics for transdisciplinary teaching\n\n\nspecific technical aspects of transdisciplinary teaching practice: for example\,\ngrading\, allocation of credits\, formation of transdisciplinary teaching teams\n\n\nnegotiating a space for transdisciplinary teaching within the academy\n\n\nhistories\, definitions and understandings of transdisciplinarity\n\n\npolitics: how contemporary understandings of transdisciplinarity intersect with the\npolitical economy: adaptation / flexibility / precarity.\n\n\nfailure in transdisciplinary teaching\n\n\nprovocations\n\n\nthe position of discipline in transdisciplinary teaching\n\n\ntransdisciplinary teaching as discipline\n\n\nmethods and approaches in transdisciplinary teaching\n\n\nfirst steps – introducing transdisciplinary teaching programmes\nContribution Formats:\nContributions can take multiple forms including video presentations\, texts\, artworks\, and case studies. We ask that they are concise (video limited to 5 minutes\, text to 2 pages) Each propositional statement will guide a short session during the workshop programme led by the authors so there will be an opportunity to expand on the ideas.\nThis seminar is a part of Erasmus + Exploring Transdisciplinary Education Combining Arts & Sciences\, specifically\, the Intensive Study Programme C1.

SUMMARY:RASL EVENTS #2 TALK with Nato Thompson: Culture as Weapon

He will address the growing role of affect in a variety of industries – from charity to counterinsurgency models in the military to contemporary real estate. Throughout the keynote\, he will explain how the landscape of strategically deployed human emotion has direct implications to the practice of artists and activism. \nFollowing the lecture we will hear from our critical respondents\, visual artist and curator Jeanne van Heeswijk & composer Merlijn Twaalfhoven. \n  \nAbout \nNato Thompson is a writer\, curator and activist. From 2007 until 2017\, he worked at Creative Time in New York\, as chief curator and in 2017 as artistic director. Currently\, he holds the position of artistic director at Philadelphia Contemporary\, a new multidisciplinary art institution in Philadelphia. He is the author of Experimental Geography (2008)\, Seeing Power: Art and Activism in the 21st Century (2015) and Culture as Weapon\, in which he shows how culture\, in the form of advertisement\, public relations and marketing\, is used by governments and multinationals to communicate\, manipulate and sustain power. \nThis event is organized by RASL Events\, Studium Witte de With of Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art\, in collaboration with Piet Zwart Institute as a kick off of the new academic year for the students of the committed institutions – Erasmus University Rotterdam\, Codarts Rotterdam\, and Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam – but will be accessible to non-students as well.
